The right time for skylights is during roof work
We install new skylights and replace aging ones across Dawson Creek, Fort St John and the South Peace, usually while we're replacing the roof around them. A skylight is a hole in your roof on purpose, so the flashing and waterproofing around it matter more than the glass.
Every penetration on our roofs gets triple waterproofing, because valleys, penetrations and eaves are where roofs actually leak. If a skylight goes in with your new shingles, the whole assembly is covered by the same 10-year workmanship warranty.

How a skylight goes in right
Planned with the roof, not after it
The best time is while your roof is open. Chris will tell you straight if your roof or your timing makes it a bad idea.
The hole is the easy part
The curb gets framed square and wrapped, because the glass doesn't keep water out. The flashing and membrane around it do.
Triple waterproofing at the penetration
The same standard as every valley and vent on our roofs. Penetrations are where roofs leak, so they get the most protection.
Tied in and backed for 10 years
Shingles weave around the flashing so water sheds past the glass, and our workmanship warranty covers the installation.
When a skylight makes sense
- You're replacing the roof anyway. The roof is open, so the install adds little disruption.
- Your existing skylights are fogged, yellowed or old. New units go in as the shingles go on.
- A dark kitchen, hallway or bathroom. The rooms where daylight changes everything.
- An old skylight is leaking. Sometimes it's the flashing, not the unit. Start with leak repair and an honest look.

What your estimate looks like
Before any work starts you'll have a written estimate you can actually read. Chris builds it the same way for every replacement:
- Three packages: Silver, Gold and Platinum. Every material listed and priced, so you compare like for like instead of guessing at line items.
- Only four possible extras, priced up front. Shiplap, a second layer of shingles, tarred-down shingles and wood repairs. Each is on the estimate disclaimer with its cost. That's the whole list.
- Measured right. By hand or by satellite, the numbers behind your price are accurate.
- A personal cover letter. It explains the estimate, links to our reviews and mentions financing options if you need them.
Adding skylights during a replacement? They show up on the same estimate, priced clearly with the rest of the job.
Skylight questions
Don't skylights always end up leaking?
A properly flashed and waterproofed skylight shouldn't leak. Penetrations are where roofs fail, which is why we triple-waterproof them and put our 10-year workmanship warranty behind the installation.
Should I replace my skylights when I replace my roof?
Usually, yes. If your skylights are as old as your shingles, replacing them while the roof is open costs far less than opening the roof again in a few years.
Can you add a skylight to my existing roof?
Call and ask. The best time is during a roof replacement, but every roof is different, and Chris will give you a straight answer either way.
What happens if something goes wrong after?
We make it right, completely. When a record snowfall caused a leak through skylights we'd installed, Chris fixed the drywall, the ceiling, the whole mess, and chased the manufacturer on his own time.
