The story
I come from an oilfield family. That's where I thought I'd spend my career, until one spring during breakup I discovered a different path.
If you don't know the oil industry, spring breakup is when the ground thaws and everything stops. No drilling, no hauling, no work. Most guys sit around waiting for things to dry up. I picked up a roofing nailer.
I started roofing in 2013 just to stay busy during those slow months. The crew was awesome, the work was physical, and it fit my lifestyle. Winter meant hockey, snowboarding and ice fishing. Spring and summer meant roofing.
In 2016 roofing became more than a way to pass the spring. I moved to Nicaragua to do missionary work, and I'd roof for 4 months each summer to support myself for 8 months abroad. What an adventure. And little did I know I was honing a skill that would serve me in ways I had yet to imagine.
The real change came in 2020 when I moved to Dawson Creek to marry my wife. Starting Raptor Mountain Roofing felt like the most natural move in the world. I knew I had the technical skills. The business side was the unknown, but I've never backed down from a challenge.
My first year taught me the hardest lesson: managing a crew. I thought hiring experienced roofers and paying them well would solve everything. Instead I got headaches. In 2021 I switched strategies completely, hiring guys with no roofing experience and training them from scratch, my way. The difference was night and day. The quality is consistent, and when experienced roofers join now, they adapt to our system instead of fighting it.
Now I'm an IKO RoofPro Select and Malarkey Certified Contractor, which lets me offer warranties other contractors in the region can't. But certifications are just paper. What matters is what clients tell me after we're done. The thing I'm most proud of in 6 years of business is our track record of customer satisfaction. Tom, "Yeti"
Earned the foreman spot in his second year through relentless attention to detail. Eight years in roofing, three with us, and one of the few roofers who still knows the hand-nailing tradition. He'll swim through rosebushes to pick up the last nail, and clients say he explains complicated situations in a way that's easy to understand. Off the roof, he's a disc golf superfan.
Jose, "Oso" (Bear)
With Chris all six years he's been roofing, and genuinely one of the smartest guys on any crew. When we're working out the best way to tackle a tricky section, Jose's suggestions win more often than not. Fastest nailer we have, never at the expense of placement or depth. New husband, new dad, loves fishing, and his Latin playlists keep job sites fun.
Tanner, "Mono Loco"
There isn't a steep roof, dormer or tiny ledge Tanner won't climb. Five years of roofing, all with us. First one up every steep pitch to set anchors and ropes for the crew, joking and laughing the whole day. After work you'll still find him in his driveway shooting hockey pucks.
Trent, "Jaguar"
Joined this year and impressed Tom and Chris right away with his precision. Three years in the industry, and we're grooming him to run the crew when Tom's not available. Same integrity and work ethic that defines everyone here.
Malerie, "Águila" (Eagle)
The backbone of the operation. Company management, bookkeeping, marketing and supply runs, and when a project needs extra muscle she comes swooping in. Here since day one. Loves fishing even more than Chris does, and trains dogs and birds with the same patience she runs the office with.

Joined as we expanded into rejuvenation, bringing new skills to match our roofing standards. Part of the next chapter, with the same commitment to doing things properly.

Conscience over cash
Chris once showed up to start a roof replacement and realized the shingles were in excellent condition. The homeowner thought she needed a new roof because she'd found shingles in her yard. He explained her roof didn't need replacing and left the money on the table.

Nailing is the most critical part of installation, and every premature failure we're called to fix traces back to poor nailing. Our crew has zero tolerance for high nails or blow-throughs, and we photo-document roofs at random intervals as quality control.

Everything made right
When new skylights and a record 5-foot snowfall caused a leak into a client's house, Chris fixed everything. The drywall, the ceiling, the whole mess, while chasing the manufacturer for reimbursement on his own time.

No surprises, ever
Anything that can possibly come up as an extra charge is stated on the estimate disclaimer with its cost: shiplap, two layers of shingles, tarred-down shingles, and wood repairs. That's the whole list.
